Austrian Coalition Party Faces Backlash After Anti-Muslim Post

(MENAFN) A controversial social media message shared by the Austrian People’s Party (OVP), part of the country’s governing coalition, has sparked strong criticism from across the political landscape.

The post, published on the party’s official account, claimed that “two-thirds of people find it difficult to live alongside Muslims,” drawing condemnation from numerous politicians.

Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer of the Social Democratic Party (SPO) issued an apology to Muslim communities, particularly those of Bosnian heritage residing in Austria.

“Austrians of Bosnian origin have for decades worked in hospitals, trade and industry and are an integral part of this country,” Marterbauer stated. “I apologize. This is not who we are.”

Yannick Shetty of the liberal NEOS, The New Austria, described the post as “fundamentally wrong and politically clumsy,” cautioning that portraying Muslims as “suspect” only worsens social divisions.

Leonore Gewessler, leader of The Greens, The Green Alternative, said the statement was inappropriate for the chancellor’s party.

“It is shameful that people who have lived, worked and contributed to our society for decades are forced to read something like this,” she remarked.
